“The school, the house, and the prison are safe. Follow the arrows, or you will die. Stay on the path, or you

will die. If you are lapped twice, you will die. Do not touch the grass, or you will die. Race… or die.” This is what you hear, coming from your own voice, in your own language, when you are unfortunately chosen for the race. “The Human Race” made its world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.

One hundred individuals are chosen by an anonymous being, instantly disappearing from where they were to appear on a path, prepared for the race. Each person hears the message written above, in their own language, with their own voice, and instantly need to race and survive. People of different sexes, different ethnic backgrounds, and different physical capacities are thrown in. The race begins, and so does the violence for survival.

What I love about this movie, is that it doesn’t give two rats’ asses if you’re missing a leg, deaf, or pregnant; every character is put to the test and no one is spared. If you’re reluctant to race and fight, most likely you will not survive. Some little unexpected surprises along the way keep you on the edge of your seat in addition to some much appreciated gore. Each character has a different personality and you learn to adore some and despise others. A little bit of déjà vu, as movies like “Battle Royale” and “The Hunger Games” have similar participant-elimination concepts, yet without the racing aspect added to it.

A superb finale concludes the movie, with an innovative idea to finish it off. The two main actors are great, especially Eddie McGee (the actor with one leg) who delivers a brilliant performance, even in action scenes that allow him to extract an advantage out of his disability.

A mixture between “Battle Royale”, “The Hunger Games”, and the TV show, “The Amazing Race”. Never a dull moment throughout the movie, as you will constantly be entertained. Highly recommended to be viewed when you can. Deserves 4 stars out of 5.
