If only The Legend of Hercules flexed its muscles as much as its main character, maybe

Director Renny Harlin did the Die Hard trilogy and hasn’t made a proper film since at least the mid-1990s. The Legend of Hercules continues that bad streak, and it may just be one of the worst films of the year, despite a half-hearted attempt to compare Hercules, the son of Zeus, to Jesus, the son of the Christian God.

The story of Hercules — whose father is the ruler of the gods, and whose mother is a mere mortal, Alcmene, wife of the brutal King Amphitryon — ought to be much more stirring. Amphitryon rules over a vast kingdom, but his wife feels neglected, and when she is told one night that Zeus wants her child, she goes to bed, makes some groaning noises while the sheets billow in an angelic light, and suddenly she has fallen pregnant. A comparison to the conception of Mary should be fairly obvious here, except that there is no suggestion that was Alcmene was a virgin.
Amphitryon, who hasn’t made love to his wife in quite some time, is furious when he discovers he is about to become a father again, but he is not curious enough to try to find out who the biological father is, and instead he simply favors his own son and heir to his throne, Iphicles. What doesn’t kill Hercules makes him stronger, and when we meet him, we can clearly see all of his anger and frustration has gone into developing his body.
Played by Kellan Lutz, an actor who is probably doing the best he can with his awful dialogue, the character of Hercules is a golden-haired, strapping, almost always shirtless young Adonis who knows his way around a sword fight, even though we never see him train. His step-brother, the black-haired Iphicles (Liam Garrigan), is perhaps the most interesting character in the film, as he has to contend with Hercules’ obviously more impressive physique, charm, strength and the respect he gets from most people, including the love from their mother.
